Protest in London

Next Planned London dates for Main Protests: See front page.

The standard format for the main monthly anti-Scientology protests in central London is to start in the morning at the large “London HQ” building on Queen Victoria Street, then move on to the smaller but much more visible location on Tottenham Court Road for the afternoon.

The locations often get abbreviated to QVS (Queen Victoria Street) and TCR (Tottenham Court Road) by the London protesters.

Please note that at both locations, the police have asked that we stay on the opposite side of the road to the Scientology buildings. (As far as I’m aware, this is an informal request at QVS and a Formal Condition at TCR.)

The best way to check in advance for tube closures is the Planned Engineering Work page on Transport for London.

Queen Victoria Street: 11am – 1pm

(Address: 146 Queen Victoria Street, London EC4V 4BY. Map)

Head to Mansion House tube station on the Circle/District lines (or, St Pauls on the Central line) and then walk. If you’re bad at navigating, you might want to watch this video of how to get there from Mansion House tube.

The Scientology building will be on your right (if coming from the East as shown on that map, or if you cross the Thames at the Millennium Footbridge). The protesters gather on the pavement opposite and also on the raised balcony area – it is often fairly quiet at the start, with more people arriving during the morning.

(Blackfriars Tube is now totally closed until mid-2011 for major alterations.)

Tottenham Court Road: 1.30pm – 5pm

(Address: 68 Tottenham Court Road, London W1T 2EZ. Map)

Please be aware of the Formal Conditions that the police have imposed on all anti-Scientology protesters at the Tottenham Court Road location. At the main monthly protests, we usually gather across the road from the “Dianetics and Scientology” shopfront.

In the past, the police have been kind enough to give us a protest-pen which keeps us out of the way of pedestrians, stops us getting run over and also provides a handy place to hang banners. If they do this on any given month, they will probably ask you to stay within that area while protesting (to keep you out of the way of pedestrians and stop you getting run over!). The entrance to the pen is normally near the phone boxes, on the north end of the pen (on your right if you’re facing across the road towards the Scientology shop).

When the main group moves from QVS to TCR by tube, we follow the police’s request that we use Tottenham Court Road tube station and walk up to the protest location. Although Goodge Street tube is very close by, it is totally unsuitable for large groups of people to use – this is because it has a set of lifts, rather than the series of escalators used at the larger stations. It’s fine to use Goodge Street station to leave at the end of the protest, or if you’re arriving on your own, just not for groups of people to all converge on at once!

Because this apparently is not clear: don’t go inside the Scientology buildings during protests.
